That 1 Guy Thursday, February 18 2010

I did a show the other night in Dallas with "That 1 Guy". The first time I saw him was at the evolve fest in nova scotia. But the show I did with him really slapped me in the face with the realization that this 1 guy is a genius. He plays a one of a kind, 2-string contraption made from 2 thick metal cylinders that are possibly used for industrial or under-ground piping.x

You Are Only As Good as your Drummer Friday, February 5 2010

You’re only as good as your drummer. I was lucky enough to see Thievery Corporation at the 9:30 club recently. It was the 2nd of 5 sold out nights in their hometown of Washington, D.C. I am pretty sure I have almost all of their recordings, as well as several of the compilations that they have put out on the 18th Street Lounge Label.

Holiday Run Wednesday, January 20 2010
The nocturnal never negative nomadic notion turned out to be super positive. A huge thank you goes out to all who were in attendance. Once again, the spca benefit at the fredericksburg field house was a success. People seemed to have fun and the house sold twice as much beer as last year. So they were stoked. The volunteers kicked serious ass. Again. We had a lot of the same people who have donated their time for this event over the years. So people knew what they were doing and the show ran like clockwork. The norva, national and neighborhood theaters were incredibly accommodating and friendly.

Remember when Garth Brooks came out with his Chris Gaines character? In case you don't, a while back Garth Brooks changed his appearance, his music and gave himself the stage name Chris Gaines. I want to say he hosted Saturday Night Live and Chris Gaines was the musical act. It was totally different from his good ‘ole boy persona. The music was serious, dark, in a minor key and followed the rock radio formula of the day. It was way weird. He may have been pitching the character for a movie or something. Maybe somebody dosed his Budweiser. I don't know, but I can understand why he went there. Like everybody else I was glad he abandoned the idea but I respect the balls it took to pull that off. I have lots of characters in my head that I often entertain the idea of showcasing. One such character is Burny Ballad; piano bar lounge singer who does Jerry Garcia ballads and weird Keller Williams songs on the piano (mostly in the key of c). There was a piano bar in my town and I went as far recording a demo in hopes of landing gigs there under the name Burny Ballad.

Guiding Light Friday, September 18 2009
For 72 years, the soap opera Guiding Light has brought joy to many people. It has recently been cancelled. This made me remember that I recorded a song about the show, using the characters and the story line of the time as the focus of the tune. It pretty much wrote itself. My wife Emily, grew up watching that show. From 97 to 2000, she and I and our 2 dogs, circled the country in a variety of motor homes playing upwards of 200 hundred shows a year. Each day, we would stop somewhere where we could get TV reception on our Radio Shack 8 inch 12 volt TV to watch this show. I of course didn't always watch but I did enough to know the characters and their personalities and their back stories and who they were sleeping with and who their wives and husbands were sleeping with and who killed who and who and so on.  Once we settled back into Fredericksburg, we were introduced TiVo. It was then I got really caught up in the characters and this song was created as a joke.  Each year, the real life actors would go to Kings Dominion (amusement park) for a series of autograph signings and interactive seminars where they take questions from fans.

ALASKA Thursday, September 17 2009

Alaska is a whole different country.  Emily and I spent a couple of weeks up there in 2000.  We got to do some amazing sight seeing and visiting of friends.  This recent trip was mostly about the people of alaska.  The main thing I remember was how excited the people were to have music come into their town.  This recent trip was no exception.  Well, except for fairbanks.  They didn't seem to care much.

Shows Shows Shows Friday, September 4 2009
I've been very blessed to be able to play some really cool shows lately. In driggs idaho, I opened for dark star orchestra at a drive in movie theater, fully operational with the FM transmission, one of the last functional, operating drive ins of its kind. I remember in high school, our local drive in had 5 dollar sundays where it would cost 5 dollars per car load, meaning we'd all meet in the parking lot and pile coolers and folding lounge chairs, as well as about 10 people in the back of a pick up and...drive on in. Ahh good times.  The show at driggs was the first time they tried anything like this at the site.  The first couple hundred cars got to actully drive in to the venue.

THE MISH Friday, August 7 2009
August 21st and 22nd I will be performing at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre in the Poudre Canyon (locally pronounce as pooder) just out side of Fort Collins in Colorado. The roadside paradise is located right next to the Cache La Poudre River off of the winedy, two lane road that is state road 14. I have pictures as evidence of the first time I ever went to this one of a kind venue. It was 95 or 96 and String Cheese was playing an afternoon set with little speakers on tripods complete with goats and dogs wandering around the 17 people in attendance.

July 31st FRIDAY Wednesday, July 22 2009
July 31st FRIDAY july 31st FRIDAYFRIDAYFRIDAYFRIDAYFRIDAY july 31st not august 1st. NOT AUGUST 1st friday july 31st. Celebrate Virginia, for those of you that don't know, is a series that is new to my home town of Fredericksburg. It is held in a field near but not in the mega shopping area called central park. The area where it is held was once cleared for an international blvd which was supposed hold stores and restaurants from around the world. The only thing that is really down that road is the field for the show and field across from It which is used for parking.
